What to Expect in Year 10

Year 10 Program
At Urban College, our Year 10 program is carefully designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation while embracing a hands-on, personalised approach to learning. We align our curriculum with the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) standards to ensure that all students receive a rigorous and balanced education, preparing them for the challenges of senior secondary school and beyond.
We recognise that Year 10 is a pivotal year in a student's educational journey, and our program is structured to give students the flexibility to explore different fields of interest, develop key skills, and build a strong sense of self. We understand that each student learns differently, and we take a highly individualized approach, tailoring learning experiences to meet the unique needs, interests, and abilities of every student.
A Supportive, Hands-On Approach
The Year 10 program at Urban College is centred around hands-on, experiential learning. We believe that students learn best when they are actively engaged, so we incorporate a variety of practical, real-world learning experiences into the curriculum. Whether through project-based learning, excursions, or collaborative tasks, students have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in meaningful ways and develop critical problem-solving and teamwork skills.
Teachers provide consistent support, guiding students through the curriculum while encouraging self-reflection and independent learning. We recognise the importance of fostering a positive, growth-focused environment, where students feel safe to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them. Our approach is all about helping students build resilience and confidence in their ability to succeed.

Tailored Learning and Individual Support
In our Year 10 program, every student’s pathway is unique. Teachers work closely with students to identify their strengths, areas for improvement, and future aspirations.
Using this information, we create personalized learning plans that cater to the individual needs and goals of each student.
This ensures that students are engaged in learning that is relevant to them, whether they are building academic skills, preparing for vocational pathways, or exploring new subjects and interests.
Our small class sizes allow for focused, one-on-one support, meaning that teachers can offer detailed feedback and targeted interventions as needed. Whether students require additional academic support or guidance in developing study skills and time management, our team is committed to meeting the diverse needs of our learners.
The goal is not just to meet VCAA standards, but to help every student feel empowered, capable, and motivated to achieve their best.
Pathway Planning for the Future
The Year 10 program is also designed to serve as a bridge to the future. Throughout the year, students are encouraged to reflect on their strengths, interests, and potential career paths.
We provide career exploration activities, individual pathway planning, and opportunities for work experience, all aimed at helping students make informed decisions about their senior secondary education.
Whether students are preparing for the VCE Vocational Major or another pathway, our focus is on equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in whatever they choose to pursue.
