VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM)

VCE Vocational Major (VCE-VM)

The VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) at Urban College offers students in Year 11 and Year 12 a practical, engaging pathway to success. Designed for students who prefer hands-on learning and are looking to build the skills and confidence needed for the workforce or further vocational study, the VCE VM combines academic rigor with real-world experience.

The VCE VM provides a flexible and supportive learning environment, ensuring students meet all academic standards while developing practical skills that are relevant to their future aspirations.

A Hands-On, Supportive Learning Approach

The VCE VM program is built on a strong foundation of practical, hands-on learning. Students engage in a curriculum that emphasises real-world applications, allowing them to build essential skills and problem-solving abilities. Through project-based tasks, collaborative learning, and independent work, students are given the opportunity to explore various fields and develop a deeper understanding of their chosen areas of interest.

The focus remains on providing students with the opportunity to build critical life and workplace skills, fostering creativity, teamwork, and independent thinking. This approach allows students to take on new challenges, develop resilience, and become confident learners.

Core Units of Work

The VCE VM is structured around several core units that ensure students receive both academic and practical education.

  • Literacy: In this unit, students focus on developing reading, writing, and communication skills, which are crucial for success in both their studies and future careers. Students engage in reading comprehension, essay writing, and other literacy activities designed to enhance their ability to express themselves clearly and effectively.

  • Numeracy: The Numeracy unit focuses on essential mathematical skills, ensuring students are equipped to solve everyday problems and engage with data in a variety of contexts. This unit provides the foundation for understanding financial management, measurement, and basic statistical analysis, all of which are valuable in the workplace.

  • Personal Development Skills (PDS): This unit focuses on building students' personal and social capabilities, including skills in communication, teamwork, and self-management. Students explore key themes around responsibility, goal-setting, and ethical decision-making, preparing them for both academic success and life beyond school.

  • Work-Related Skills (WRS): As a key component of the VCE VM, students are required to complete structured work-based learning or work placement hours. This real-world experience helps students develop practical skills in their chosen field, learn how to navigate a professional environment, and gain insight into potential career pathways. The required work placement hours give students valuable exposure to the workforce, supporting the development of skills such as time management, problem-solving, and workplace communication.

Pathways and Future Opportunities

The VCE VM is designed to prepare students for life after school. On completion, students receive a VCE Vocational Major certificate, recognising both their academic achievements and practical skills.

This pathway suits students aiming to join the workforce, begin an apprenticeship, or continue vocational studies. Urban College teachers offer ongoing support, providing guidance, mentorship, and personalised feedback.

Our goal is to ensure students not only meet academic standards but also gain the confidence and experience needed to thrive beyond school.

Tailored Learning and Individual Support

At Urban College, we understand that each student has unique strengths, challenges, and learning styles. That's why our VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) program is designed to provide personalised learning experiences that cater to the individual needs of each student.

Our teaching approach ensures that every student receives the support they need to succeed. Teachers work closely with students to identify their learning preferences, academic goals, and career interests, creating an environment where students feel confident in their abilities and are empowered to take ownership of their learning journey.

In addition to tailored lesson plans and flexible assessment tasks, students benefit from one-on-one support, regular check-ins, and guidance on managing their workload. This ensures that students can progress at their own pace while staying engaged with the curriculum. Whether they need additional assistance with core subjects like Literacy or Numeracy, or support with workplace skills and work placement, our staff are committed to providing ongoing encouragement and personalised strategies to help students achieve their best.

Our focus is on building confidence and fostering independence, ensuring that students leave the program not just with academic qualifications but also with the practical skills and self-assurance to succeed in their chosen pathways.

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

Vocational Education and Training (VET)

At Urban College, we recognise the importance of practical, real-world learning that prepares students for life beyond school. Vocational Education and Training (VET) is an important part of this journey, offering students the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications while completing their secondary education.

VET courses allow students to explore specific industries, develop job-ready skills, and work toward future employment or further training. Whether students are interested in trades, hospitality, business, health, or other pathways, VET provides a valuable head start in their chosen field.
