Whole School Excursion to Werribee Zoo

On Monday 1st September 2025, 60 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 attended our whole school excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo. This excursion formed a valuable extension of the curriculum for each year level, linking classroom learning with hands-on experiences in an authentic environment.

All students took part in a safari bus tour, exploring the open range habitats and observing animals up close. Each year level also engaged in specialised programs designed to support their current units of study.

Year 10 Students participated in the Zoo’s Evolution and Natural Selection program, exploring adaptations, biodiversity, and the ethical considerations of wildlife tourism. The program immersed students in the Asian Elephant habitat, where they examined how natural selection shapes species and considered how environmental changes may influence future adaptations.

Year 11 students focused on their Workplace Skills unit, engaging in authentic, zoo-based activities that developed teamwork, communication and problem-solving. They gained insight into the technical and specialist skills required for careers such as zoo keeping, while also exploring Zoos Victoria’s community conservation campaigns and mission to fight extinction.

Year 12 students undertook a self-guided tour, gathering information for their Unit 4 Literacy assessments with an advocacy focus. This activity encouraged critical thinking, research and communication skills in real-world contexts.

The excursion was a highly valuable educational experience, connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. Students will continue to draw on their Werribee Zoo visit in upcoming classwork and assessments, making the day both enjoyable and academically enriching.
