Celebrating Our Class of 2025: A Graduation to Remember

Our Year 12 students reached an unforgettable milestone at their graduation ceremony, held at the beautiful Chateau Wyuna.

Our Year 12 students reached an unforgettable milestone at their graduation ceremony, held at the beautiful Chateau Wyuna. Surrounded by more than 100 family members and friends, the evening was filled with pride, joy, and plenty of heartfelt moments.

The night began with a meaningful Welcome to Country from Shae before the formalities commenced. Students—looking proud in their caps and gowns—listened to touching speeches from Principal Elise, student representative Evie Connor, and Year 12 teacher Suzi. Each shared stories of resilience, growth, and the incredible journey this cohort has taken throughout their senior years.

One by one, students took to the stage to receive their Graduation Certificates, cheered on by their families and peers. The moment they officially became the Graduating Class of 2025 was marked by turning their tassels—a symbolic gesture signifying the completion of their secondary education.

The celebration ended on a high as the graduates gathered outside for the traditional hat toss. Laughter, excitement, and pride filled the air, creating the perfect ending to a truly special evening.

Following the success of Graduation, celebrations continued at this year’s Formal, where our Year 10, 11, and 12 students came together for a night of great food, drinks, dancing, and plenty of fun.

With a buzzing dance floor, a lively photo booth, and an incredible DJ, the event was a huge hit. A massive thank you goes to Suzi and Ewen for organising such a seamless evening, and to Year 12 student Evie Connor for her valuable support in bringing the event together.

The Formal also provided a wonderful moment to recognise and celebrate student achievements across the year. From academic excellence to personal growth, it was a chance to acknowledge the dedication, effort, and wins of 2025.

Together, Graduation and Formal created a fitting finale to an incredible year—bringing our community together to honour our students, celebrate their strengths, and look ahead to the exciting paths they will take next.

As part of their Year 12 Literacy Unit 4 – Speaking to Advise or Advocate assessment, our students had the exciting opportunity to visit Donkeyman Records in Rowville on Tuesday, 14 October.

Working in small groups, students produced and professionally recorded 15–20 minute podcast episodes that either advised others by providing practical information and guidance, or advocated for positive change on issues that matter most to young people.

Topics explored included youth homelessness, mental health, climate action, workplace rights, and gender equality. The experience gave students a unique insight into the creative process of podcasting, combining literacy skills with real-world communication and collaboration.

On Monday 1st September 2025, 60 students from Years 10, 11 and 12 attended our whole school excursion to Werribee Open Range Zoo. This excursion formed a valuable extension of the curriculum for each year level, linking classroom learning with hands-on experiences in an authentic environment.

All students took part in a safari bus tour, exploring the open range habitats and observing animals up close. Each year level also engaged in specialised programs designed to support their current units of study.

Year 10 Students participated in the Zoo’s Evolution and Natural Selection program, exploring adaptations, biodiversity, and the ethical considerations of wildlife tourism. The program immersed students in the Asian Elephant habitat, where they examined how natural selection shapes species and considered how environmental changes may influence future adaptations.

Year 11 students focused on their Workplace Skills unit, engaging in authentic, zoo-based activities that developed teamwork, communication and problem-solving. They gained insight into the technical and specialist skills required for careers such as zoo keeping, while also exploring Zoos Victoria’s community conservation campaigns and mission to fight extinction.

Year 12 students undertook a self-guided tour, gathering information for their Unit 4 Literacy assessments with an advocacy focus. This activity encouraged critical thinking, research and communication skills in real-world contexts.

The excursion was a highly valuable educational experience, connecting classroom learning to real-world applications. Students will continue to draw on their Werribee Zoo visit in upcoming classwork and assessments, making the day both enjoyable and academically enriching.

Wellbeing Day: The Power of Self-Care Term 3

This term, our Wellbeing Day placed a strong emphasis on the importance of self-care, wellbeing, and building positive connections within our school community.

This term, our Wellbeing Day placed a strong emphasis on the importance of self-care, wellbeing, and building positive connections within our school community.

The day began with a hearty BBQ breakfast, providing a chance for students and staff to gather together, share a meal, and set a positive tone for the day ahead. Following breakfast, students listened to guest speaker Arthur Bolkas, a criminologist who generously shared his personal journey. Arthur spoke openly about his struggles, his experience of imprisonment, and his path to recovery and renewal. He highlighted the importance of resilience, responsibility, and making positive choices for the future. His honesty and courage resonated deeply with students, who engaged by asking thoughtful questions and reflecting on the messages he shared. This powerful session was an inspiring way to begin the day.

After a shared pizza lunch, students moved into a variety of interactive afternoon sessions designed to promote different aspects of wellbeing. These included:

Harm minimisation workshop with YSAS, encouraging awareness and practical strategies for making safer choices.

A grounding walk in the fresh air, allowing students to slow down, connect with nature, and reset their energy.

Tounge drum meditation, offering a unique sound-based mindfulness experience.

Essential oil roller making, where students created their own calming blends to support relaxation and focus.

Mindfulness and Smiling Minds activities, giving students tools to manage stress and build self-awareness.

Bracelet making and positive affirmations, combining creativity with personal reflection.

A team-building obstacle course, filled with fun, collaboration, and prizes to celebrate effort and teamwork.

The balance of structured workshops, creative outlets, and physical activity ensured that students could engage in experiences that suited their interests and supported their wellbeing in different ways.

The day concluded with time for students to reflect on what they had learned and enjoyed. Many expressed appreciation for the chance to try something new, while others valued the opportunity to connect with their peers and take a break from routine.

Overall, Wellbeing Day was a meaningful reminder of the importance of looking after ourselves and each other. Through shared meals, inspiring stories, and practical wellbeing activities, our students experienced a day filled with connection, reflection, and positivity. It was a celebration of community and an investment in the wellbeing of every student.

Last Wednesday, our Year 10 students and those undertaking the VET Community Service course took part in a full-day First Aid training program. The session combined theory with plenty of hands-on practice, giving students the chance to develop practical, lifesaving skills that can make a real difference in emergencies.

Students learned how to recognise and respond to common medical situations, from cuts and burns to asthma and anaphylaxis. They also gained confidence in performing CPR, using a defibrillator, and applying the DRSABCD action plan in simulated scenarios.

By the end of the day, students left not only with valuable First Aid knowledge but also with a sense of responsibility and readiness to support others in their community. This training is an important step in equipping them with skills for both their studies and their everyday lives.

On Friday 1st August, our Year 10 students swapped the classroom for steel-toed boots and high-vis vests, visiting the South Dynon Train Maintenance Facility being upgraded as part of Victoria's Big Build. This opportunity was made possible through a partnership with Laing O’Rourke, one of Australia’s leading construction companies.

The visit began with an introduction from the Project Director and Project Lead who outlined the scope and significance of the upgrade project, as well as other major rail network improvements, including the level crossing removals at Mooroolbark, Croydon, and Ringwood East train stations. Presentations also included inspiring stories from team members who entered the industry via various journeys, including social inclusion programs, highlighting diverse pathways into construction careers.

Students also participated in a ‘pre-start’ briefing, the same type of safety and project planning meeting conducted daily for the full-time crews at 7:00am. This gave students a genuine feel for professional site culture and the importance of safety in large-scale projects.

A highlight was the site tour, where students got up close to the South Dynon Train Maintenance Facility and learned about the many different career paths in civil construction, from hands-on trades to engineering, project management, design, and safety roles.

The visit opened students’ eyes to the exciting possibilities in the construction industry and showed that there’s more than one pathway to get there. A huge thank you to the Big Build project team and Laing O’Rourke for welcoming us and inspiring our future workforce!

On Monday, June 2nd, Urban College students came together for a full-day event focused on building Respectful Relationships. The day was all about promoting inclusivity, wellbeing, and positive communication—and it offered a great mix of hands-on activities, reflection, and fun.

The morning kicked off with a relaxed BBQ breakfast, giving everyone a chance to connect before the day got underway. After that staff welcomed students with an overview of the day, setting the tone for what was to come. One of the highlights of the morning was the Green Flag/Red Flag activity, which helped students explore what healthy and unhealthy relationships can look like.

Students then took part in a series of rotating workshops that included a defence class, anti-bullying awareness activities (Doing It For Dolly), team-building games, and the chance to contribute to a collaborative art project.

Following a well-earned pizza lunch, energy levels rose again for the Amazing Race, organised and led by our Year 12 students. The race saw teams tackle a variety of challenges across the school grounds and at nearby Toremore Reserve. For students who preferred a quieter pace, a calming space was set up with bracelet making, sensory activities, and colouring.

The day wrapped up with a reflection survey, giving students the opportunity to share what they’d learned and how their thinking had shifted throughout the day.

A big thank you to all the staff, student leaders, and facilitators who made the day possible. It was a great example of our school community coming together to support each other and celebrate what it means to build respectful, positive relationships.

Our recent excursion to the METEC Driver Training Centre was an exciting and memorable experience for everyone involved. The day was filled with energy, personal growth, and plenty of proud moments.

Students rotated through two key sessions. The first was a theory class, where they explored road laws, hazard perception, and what it truly means to be a safe and responsible driver. The second was a hands-on session, giving students the incredible opportunity to get behind the wheel and experience driving firsthand.

The practical component took place on METEC’s 5 km closed-road circuit, providing a safe and controlled environment for students to learn—many for the very first time. It was inspiring to see how quickly they adapted to being in control of a vehicle. With the guidance of METEC’s experienced instructors, students approached the challenge with confidence, maturity, and a genuine eagerness to learn.

Throughout the day, their behaviour was nothing short of outstanding. They listened attentively, supported one another, and showed great respect for the staff and equipment. METEC instructors even commented on how polite, engaged, and motivated our group was—a true credit to the students and their willingness to embrace the experience.

What stood out most was just how much the students enjoyed themselves. Whether it was the thrill of navigating a roundabout or the pride of completing a smooth park, their smiles said it all. Many students shared how much they learned and how exciting it was to drive in such a realistic yet safe setting.

All in all, the METEC excursion was a tremendous success. Each student brought a positive attitude, demonstrated maturity, and made the most of the opportunity. We couldn’t be prouder of how they represented our school, and we’re confident this experience has brought them one step closer to becoming safe, capable drivers. They should all be very proud of themselves.

On Monday, 17th March, Urban College hosted a vibrant and educational Wellbeing Day, focusing on cultural awareness, safety, and community connection. This special event provided an opportunity for students and staff to deepen their understanding of cultural diversity while fostering a strong sense of belonging and respect.

The morning commenced with a cultural safety survey, designed to gauge students' prior knowledge, and set the stage for meaningful discussions. College Counsellor, Jen, introduced the theme of the day, setting clear expectations and encouraging open-mindedness. Aunty Julie and Rick Baldwin, esteemed Indigenous Elders, then welcomed everyone with a heartfelt Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony—a powerful moment that grounded the day in tradition and respect. Rick also shared his impressive collection of artifacts and traditional tools, giving students a hands-on glimpse into Indigenous heritage.

After a short break, students engaged in a series of rotating activities designed to celebrate different cultures and perspectives. From the intricate art of Origami, the vibrant expression of Celebration Art, to the lively challenge of Cultural Bingo, each activity encouraged creativity, collaboration, and cross-cultural appreciation.

Lunchtime brought a feast of international flavours at the Tasting Around the World event, held in the College Hub. Students delighted in sampling dishes from Germany, the UK, Greece, the Netherlands, Australian Bush Tucker and beyond. Meanwhile, Alisha, Rach, and Sabina shared pieces of their family histories, offering personal insights into their cultural backgrounds. Out on the oval, Suzi, James, and Em led an AFL activity, keeping energy levels high and emphasizing the role of sports in cultural exchange.

The afternoon featured an enriching session on Indigenous languages and Indigenous community, led by our Learning Assistant, Shae, a proud Kamilaroi woman. This presentation shed light on the beauty and significance of Indigenous languages, sparking curiosity and respect among students. Additionally, the “Where Are We From?” activity, facilitated by Alisha and Dana, invited students to reflect on their own cultural roots and share their unique stories with the group.

To conclude the day, a second cultural safety survey allowed students to reflect on their newfound knowledge and insights. This provided a meaningful moment of self-assessment, reinforcing the importance of cultural awareness in everyday life.

The success of this event was made possible by the enthusiasm and commitment of our incredible staff, volunteers, and students. Their participation and willingness to engage in meaningful conversations made this Wellbeing Day truly impactful. We look forward to continuing this journey in our Term 2 Wellbeing Day, building on the foundation of cultural safety and awareness to create an even more inclusive and connected community.

On Thursday the 15th of August our entire school visited Healesville Sanctuary for a day of learning and exploration.

Students enjoyed a self-guided tour, with Year 10’s participating in the Eco Systems program, directly tying into their Science and Geography studies.

Year 11 students used the visit to expand on their “Understanding Issues and Voices” topic for their Literacy unit, by exploring how the sanctuary give voice to the issues that face Australian Flora and Fauna.
The year 12 students continued to explore Advocacy by documenting the advocacy found within the Sanctuary for Indigenous Australians, their History and Culture as well as exploring additional information on their chosen endangered Australian animal and how the sanctuary are advocating for them.

It was a fantastic day connecting classroom concepts with real-world experiences.

They learned to apply skills from CPR to psychological first aid and substance overdose as well as making safe choices around drugs and driving. The students were provided with vital information to be confident in de-escalation of immediate situation and to help them direct the person to an appropriate intervention.

As part of the year 11 Personal Development Unit, students participated in running The Biggest Morning Tea with the Hills Church Op Shop in Ferntree Gully on Thursday the 30th of May.

Students broke into small groups and chose a special dish to make. We had lots of yummy food on offer including brownies, cake pops, choc chip cookies, bacon and egg quiches, rocky road, herb scones, kingston biscuits, chocolate mousse, vegemite scrolls and choc-banana bread.

Students worked on a roster where they served cakes or hot beverages to the local community. They enjoyed chatting with the locals and basking in the positive feedback about how delicious their treats were.

We raised a total of $433 which was a wonderful effort, which was all donated to the Cancer Council.

It was great to host Jackson Taylor, our local member of Parliament, during our first term. Jackson took the time to post on our Facebook page, these were his thoughts.

"Think positive" is the best way to encapsulate Mountain District Community College - a whole of person well-being focused school, catering for young people who have complex needs that may not fit into a 'typical' classroom. It was great to get a guided tour of their new premises with principal, Elise, assistant principal Allan and chair of the board, Chris.

Bright, open spaces greet their students - and with 16 staff, they're able to have appropriately modify curriculum with hands on learning.

Because, of course, each student and their needs are different - and the work that MDCC and team do makes a massive difference in an at-risk young person's life.

Their new home is in the heart of Boronia - and I just know they'll go from strength!

We thank him for making time in his busy schedule and no doubt will seek his governments support in years to come.

On Friday 16th February the year 12 students went to Hardrock Indoor Climbing Centre as part of the Personal Development curriculum, looking at teamwork and communication. We had a mix of emotion with some students quite anxious with others excited to do something new.

Upon arrival students were taken through a safety induction, instructions on the equipment, and how to use it safely. Students then broke into pairs and using the practice walls were signed off on their understanding of the instructions and allowed to attempt the high walls, this is when the spider monkeys really shone…

Before we knew it, we had students climbing the walls (literally), whilst their partners called up encouragement and instructions. Whilst most loved climbing the walls, a couple really came into their own on belay (managing the ropes for there climber) and giving direction.

All in all, it was a great day with everyone who went enjoying themselves.
